American Airlines Baggage Allowance

American permits 1 carry-on up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches, including handles and wheels, plus 1 personal item up to 18 x 14 x 8 inches that fits under the seat. Aircraft and airport restrictions can apply; smaller American Eagle aircraft may require gate checking. Checked-bag allowances and fees depend on fare, ticket date, route, payment channel, cabin and eligible status, card or military benefits. The usual checked-bag limit is 62 linear inches and 50 pounds, with cabin and Australia/New Zealand exceptions. Partner-operated flights can have different rules. Use American’s live policy and the Camli baggage and carry-on guides to confirm the allowance for each traveler. Measure checked-bag size as length + width + height. On American-operated flights, a bag over 115 inches / 292 cm or over 100 pounds / 45 kg is not accepted. If it is both oversize and overweight, American applies the higher supplemental fee in addition to the checked-bag fee; this is not a universal excess-bag price or an acceptance promise. Also check the live Bag limitations page: its November 15, 2026–January 11, 2027 restrictions cap checked bags at 2 on listed destination trips and can restrict large or heavy items. That future holiday limit does not apply to every international flight.

Online check-in, airport check-in, bag drop and boarding have separate deadlines. American’s dedicated check-in page lists online/app check-in from 24 hours before departure until 45 minutes before U.S. flights or 90 minutes before international flights. Its general planning page uses different international wording; confirm the dedicated airport instructions and operating carrier. Documents, assistance or checked bags may still require an agent. For a Camli-issued reservation, keep the agency confirmation and American confirmation or ticket number. American’s app can support an eligible first oneworld-operated flight; for other partner flights, use the first operating airline’s app or site and its booking reference. Confirm the issued boarding passes, bag tag and connection procedures; a mobile pass is not available for every airport or traveler. Reviewed timing guidance: American check-in opens 24 hours before scheduled departure, but its published online/app guidance differs. The arrival guide says check-in may remain available until 45 minutes before domestic departure or 90 minutes internationally. The app FAQ gives narrower windows: 1–24 hours before U.S./Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands flights and 2–24 hours internationally. Plan around those narrower windows; actual app behavior is unresolved by documentation. Separately, airport check-in and bags generally require 45 minutes within the U.S. or 60 minutes outside it. Airport exceptions, including counter-only CCS, apply; see detailed timings.

• Separate fare, seat and cabin. Read the displayed Main brand and exact change/refund rules; Basic Economy restrictions do not disappear when you buy Preferred or Main Cabin Extra. Premium Economy and premium cabins depend on the flight.
• Check the marketing and operating carrier for every segment; baggage, check-in, onboard product and some loyalty rules may follow the operating airline. Check first-flight check-in and whether all tickets share one reservation before assuming baggage transfer.
• Review the ticket issue date, route, fare, payment channel and traveler eligibility before relying on a checked-bag allowance or card or status benefit. Measure oversize, heavy or sports items and check seasonal destination limits. On international trips, verify passport-matching details and transit as well as destination documents.
• Read change, cancellation and refund terms before paying. A waived change fee does not remove a fare difference. Cancel before the first flight when required to preserve eligible value; a no-show may lose the remaining ticket and later segments. Read the credit’s named-passenger, expiry and redemption rules. A credit is not cash; seats, bags and upgrades may have separate ticket numbers and refund conditions.
• Add your AAdvantage number, then verify the fare, booking code, route, ticket date and marketing carrier. Special fares can earn by distance and booking class, rather than ticket price; not every ticket earns. Only flown eligible segments earn; retain tickets and boarding passes to request eligible missing AAdvantage miles within 12 months. Bonus Miles do not earn Loyalty Points.
• For families, keep adults and children on one reservation and follow American’s seating conditions, including the whole-reservation Basic Economy seat-selection rule. Arrange wheelchair or disability help early and check partner rules. What is the difference between American Basic Economy and Main Cabin?

Both are fares within Main Cabin. Basic Economy permits 1 carry-on and 1 personal item under American’s requirements, but advance seat choice, changes, checked bags and loyalty benefits have restrictions. Main Cabin includes an available standard seat at booking. Basic Economy bought on or after May 18, 2026 is excluded from complimentary upgrades and complimentary Preferred/Main Cabin Extra seats; tickets bought on or after December 17, 2025 do not earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points. Compare the actual ticket rules. Buying a Preferred or Main Cabin Extra seat does not convert Basic Economy into a less restrictive fare or remove its boarding restrictions. Basic Economy typically boards in Group 9 unless an eligible higher group is shown on the boarding pass. The May 18, 2026 exclusion also includes systemwide upgrades. If the display shows Main Plus, Main Select or Main Flexible, these are branded fare options, not extra physical cabins. American’s July 2026 agency display guide uses Main Flexible for a fully refundable Main fare; the name Main alone does not establish refundability. Each offer’s inclusions and restrictions still need checking, and every brand is not available on every itinerary. A change permitted by the ticket can still require a fare difference. After 24 hours, American’s Basic Economy page describes limited regional change and qualifying direct-booking cancellation-to-Trip-Credit exceptions. The direct-booking credit pathway has resident, booking-channel, membership, fare-value and before-departure conditions and can deduct a cancellation fee. Is Main Cabin Extra the same as Premium Economy?

No. Main Cabin Extra adds legroom and selected benefits to a Main Cabin seat. Preferred seats offer a more favorable location, not the same extra-legroom package. Premium Economy is a separate cabin with a wider seat and added amenities on select routes and aircraft. Check the exact seat, cabin and operating carrier; availability and seat assignments are not guaranteed. Main Cabin Extra’s complimentary alcoholic drinks apply only on flights with full drink service and are subject to service limits. Premium Economy’s Priority airport privileges require American-marketed and -operated travel and vary by airport. Premium Economy amenity kits and bedding are offered on international and select Los Angeles/New York flights, not every domestic flight. Paid Preferred and Main Cabin Extra seats are tied to the purchased flight, are non-transferable and have separate refund conditions; do not assume the ticket’s refund rule refunds the seat automatically. A status upgrade is an availability-controlled benefit, not the purchase of a premium cabin. For a long-distance option, check the aircraft’s actual layout: Flagship Suite is configuration-specific, while Flagship Lounge and Flagship Dining have separate eligibility rules. Legacy and updated configurations can share an aircraft-family name. American has announced that Flagship First will no longer be available for purchase on 777-300ER aircraft for travel beginning November 19, 2026, and on transcontinental routes for travel beginning March 28, 2027. Does American Basic Economy include a carry-on or checked bag?

Yes to 1 carry-on and 1 personal item under American’s size and fit rules; a checked bag is not automatically included. The carry-on limit is 22 x 14 x 9 inches including wheels and handles, and the under-seat personal-item limit is 18 x 14 x 8 inches. Checked-bag fees and exemptions depend on route, ticket date and eligible status, card or military benefits. Aircraft and partner-operated flights can impose different restrictions. One useful route exception is Australia/New Zealand: American lists 1 free checked bag up to 70 lb / 32 kg in Basic or Main, 2 in Premium Economy or Business and 3 in First for confirmed customers. Excess bags there have different weight-fee treatment; this is not a worldwide Basic Economy entitlement. Depending on destination, active U.S. military and eligible dependents traveling on orders with ID may check up to 5 bags of up to 100 lb each on American-marketed and -operated itineraries; active U.S. military with ID on personal or leisure travel may check up to 3 bags of up to 50 lb each. Eligible card first-bag benefits are limited to their stated domestic American-operated scope and reservation conditions. Will an American Airlines ticket booked through Camli earn AAdvantage miles?

Agency purchase alone does not determine earning. Eligible published fares and special fares have different rules; some package or consolidator fares earn from distance and booking class, while excluded tickets earn nothing. Basic Economy bought on or after December 17, 2025 does not earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points. Add your number and verify the fare, booking code, route, ticket date and marketing carrier. Bonus Miles do not earn Loyalty Points. For an eligible discounted published fare, earning uses the actual post-discount base fare, not a pre-discount headline price. Mixed American- and partner-marketed itineraries can be calculated segment by segment, so an American flight number and an operating partner are different facts to check. Only the passenger who flies earns eligible flight credit; canceled or unflown segments earn no miles or Loyalty Points. Choose one loyalty program, add its number before travel and keep the ticket and boarding passes. American allows eligible missing-flight-mile requests online within 12 months. Card-spend earning is separate from flight earning; having an eligible card does not remove a fare-specific exclusion, make Bonus Miles into Loyalty Points or guarantee a seat upgrade. When can I check in for an American Airlines flight?

American’s dedicated check-in page lists online/app check-in from 24 hours before departure until 45 minutes before U.S. flights or 90 minutes before international flights. Airport check-in and bag-drop deadlines are separate and can be earlier at specific airports. These are deadlines, not arrival targets: American recommends at least 2 hours before U.S. flights and 3 hours before flights outside the U.S. Follow the current airport instructions and operating carrier’s rules for each segment, and leave time for security and boarding. American’s airport baseline is 45 minutes within the U.S. and 60 minutes to or from outside the U.S.; its live list contains earlier airports. At named departure airports, checked bags cannot be accepted more than 4 hours early; HNL and MCO use 6 hours and EWR uses 8 hours. These earliest bag-acceptance limits are not recommended arrival times. Most flights begin boarding 30–50 minutes before departure. American’s boarding page says boarding ends 15 minutes before departure, while its planning page tells travelers to be gate-ready 15 minutes before domestic or 30 minutes before international departure. Follow the boarding pass and the earlier applicable instruction. An unaccompanied minor needs counter check-in at least 2 hours before departure and cannot use online or kiosk check-in. For a partner connection, confirm the first operating carrier’s check-in path, boarding passes and bag tag; a mobile boarding pass or through-transfer is not universal. Check terminal changes, customs and any further airport procedures. If eligible and both marketed and operated by American, up to 3 bags can be prepaid online/app until 2 hours before departure, with country and reservation-state exclusions. That payment cutoff is not bag-drop permission or an extra allowance. How do I manage an American ticket purchased through Camli or another agency?

Start with the seller that issued the ticket for changes, refunds or reissues, and keep the agency and airline confirmation details. Do not assume a direct-booking Basic Economy credit option applies to an agency ticket. A ticket change, cancellation and refund request are separate actions. Even a wholly unrestricted fare may require an additional fare collection if the replacement costs more. Cancel before the first departure when needed to preserve eligible value; a missed segment may cause remaining segments to be canceled, and fare rules still determine whether any credit exists. If aa.com accepts an eligible agency-ticket change, American says there is no extra aa.com change fee for that supported action, but this does not remove fare differences, fare restrictions or the seller’s own terms. Later changes then go through aa.com or American Reservations. Keep cancellation emails and the main and add-on ticket numbers: paid seats, bags and upgrades can have separate documents and separate refund treatment. For an airline-initiated disruption, compare the replacement before accepting it; accepting rebooking can end the applicable refund path. American describes different support for carrier-caused problems and weather or other events outside its control. Do not assume meals, hotels, reimbursement, another airline’s seat or compensation are guaranteed. Trip Credit can be used by its holder to book travel for themselves or others within its restrictions; Flight Credit is limited to the passenger named on it. Point-of-sale, currency and itinerary rules can restrict redemption. Check the usable credit amount before choosing replacement flights. For a group booking, American’s Group & Meeting Travel overview invites requests for groups of 10 or more, including group trips, conventions and smaller meetings, with space potentially blocked up to 11 months ahead. It does not establish separate leisure-group or meeting minimums or guaranteed fares. Rates and space are not guaranteed. Contacting Camli or submitting an inquiry does not automatically create a confirmed American Airlines group reservation, fare quote, seat hold or negotiated contract. Before committing, identify the contracting and issuing parties, covered travelers, permitted carriers and routes, any common flight or segment, and whether departure cities or dates can differ. Confirm the conditions for holding space and ticketing deadlines. Keep the written quotation and applicable Group Booking Confirmation together. Check deposit amount and due date, installments or final payment, names and Secure Flight details, ticketing, substitutions, changes, cancellation charges and unused-ticket treatment. No single deposit, payment date or name-change deadline applies to every group; American’s public documents include older contracts, so the confirmation for your booking must settle those terms. Can I use American’s same-day confirmed change or standby?

Only on eligible flights, subject to availability. The replacement must depart the same day, use the same origin and destination airports and the same number and location of stops, and be marketed and operated by American. Earlier-flight standby is generally available to eligible travelers; later standby is limited to AAdvantage status members. Confirm market, fare, request-time and fee conditions. A same-day option is not permission to change a Basic Economy ticket freely or a cash-refund entitlement. American lists non-award Main Select among fares eligible for complimentary confirmed same-day change and standby only within and between the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. Its April 2026 product overview describes Main Select as domestic-market-only; it is not a benefit on every international or partner itinerary. Availability, same-day, same-airports, same-stops and American-marketed-and-operated conditions still apply. This differs from an advance ticket change or a cash refund. Where should I check American pet and unaccompanied-minor rules?

Use American’s special-assistance pages before booking and again before travel. Keep children and accompanying adults in one reservation. American’s no-cost adjacent-seat guarantee for a child 14 or younger, including Basic Economy, depends on all published conditions: adjacent seats in the ticketed class available at booking, everyone selecting seats or everyone skipping them, no later seat changes, a suitable layout and no smaller-aircraft substitution. With Basic Economy, skip seats for the whole reservation. If the conditions are not met, American says it will try to place the child next to an adult; that is not a promise that the entire family sits together. A lap infant must remain under 2 for the whole trip; a child turning 2 needs a seat for the remaining segments. Only 1 lap infant is allowed per ticketed accompanying adult. International lap-infant travel can involve taxes and a percentage of the adult fare, not an automatically free ticket. Infants under 7 days need medical clearance, and approved child restraints, bassinets and strollers have their own seat, aircraft and handling rules. Children under 5 cannot travel alone. Unaccompanied-minor service is required at 5–14 and optional at 15–17. Ages 5–7 must use a nonstop American-operated flight; older service-using children may connect only through American’s listed hubs. Partner/codeshare flights, airport-change and overnight connections are excluded, and restrictions apply to the last connection of the day. Book by phone, plan counter check-in at least 2 hours before departure and prepare age proof, forms and both adults’ contact information. Online and kiosk check-in are unavailable. The departure adult must stay at the gate until the flight is airborne; the pickup adult needs the required gate pass, ID and paperwork. Cabin crew cannot continuously monitor the child. The service fee and sibling treatment must be checked for the departure market rather than assumed worldwide. Carry-on pets are cats or dogs in an accepted closed carrier under the seat for the flight. With the carrier, American permits only 1 additional personal item or overhead carry-on, not both. Its recommended soft-carrier dimensions are 18 x 11 x 11 inches; hard carriers are up to 19 x 13 x 9 on mainline or 16 x 12 x 8 on American Eagle, subject to under-seat fit. Cabin, seat, aircraft, capacity, destination, health and age restrictions apply. Carry-on pets are barred to/from Hawaii and on trans-Atlantic/trans-Pacific travel, among other destination exclusions.
