Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Emirates checked baggage allowance?
Emirates applies the weight concept on most routes: Economy 20–35 kg depending on fare type, Business 40 kg, First 50 kg. It applies the piece concept on flights to and from the Americas and on flights originating in Africa, and the weight concept nearly everywhere else. Check which one applies to your ticket before you pack, because the two systems reward very different packing strategies.
What is the difference between Emirates’ weight concept and piece concept?
Under the weight concept you get a total weight allowance (e.g. 30 kg) that you can split across multiple bags as long as no single bag exceeds 32 kg. Under the piece concept you get a set number of bags (typically one or two) each with its own weight cap (23 or 32 kg). The piece concept applies on Americas and Africa routes; the weight concept applies everywhere else.
How many bags can I check flying Emirates to the United States?
Flights to and from the Americas use the piece concept. Economy Special includes one bag up to 23 kg, while Economy Saver, Flex and Flex Plus include two bags of 23 kg each. Business and First include two bags of 32 kg each. The cheapest Economy fare gives you one bag rather than two, so check your fare type before booking if you are travelling with more luggage.
Does the piece concept apply if I connect through Dubai?
Yes. If any part of your journey touches the Americas, the piece concept applies to the whole itinerary rather than just that leg. A traveller flying from India to the United States via Dubai should pack for two bags of 23 kg from the start, not for a weight allowance. This catches out a lot of travellers on connecting tickets.
What is the Emirates carry-on size and weight limit?
Economy allows one cabin bag up to 55 x 38 x 20 cm and 7 kg. This is a single item, so a laptop bag has to fit inside it rather than travel separately. Premium Economy keeps the same dimensions but allows 10 kg. Business and First allow two pieces, a briefcase up to 45 x 35 x 20 cm plus a handbag or garment bag. Emirates weighs cabin bags at check-in and sometimes again at the gate.
Are there different Emirates baggage rules for flights from India?
Yes. India is one of Emirates’ largest markets and carries some route-specific rules. Economy Special departures from India carry a higher checked allowance than the standard 20 kg, and passengers boarding in India are limited to one cabin bag with total dimensions up to 115 cm. Buying extra allowance online in advance is usually cheaper than paying at the airport counter.
How much does extra baggage cost on Emirates?
It varies widely by route, direction and whether you buy in advance. Excess weight on weight-concept routes is charged per kilogram, while an additional piece on piece-concept routes typically runs into the low hundreds of US dollars. Buying extra allowance online through Manage Your Booking before you travel is consistently cheaper than paying at the airport, so add it in advance if you know you will be over.
What cabins does Emirates offer?
Emirates flies four cabins: Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First. Premium Economy is the newest and is still rolling out across the fleet on retrofitted A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft and new A350s, so it is not available on every route or every daily frequency. Check the specific flight number before assuming it is offered, since one departure on a route may carry it while another does not.
Does Emirates offer online check-in?
Yes. Online check-in opens 48 hours before departure and closes 90 minutes before the scheduled departure time, through emirates.com or the Emirates app. You can confirm seats, add your Skywards number and download a mobile boarding pass. Airport kiosks and check-in desks are also available if you prefer to check in on the day.
Can I cancel an Emirates ticket within 24 hours?
For flights originating in the United States, the U.S. Department of Transportation 24-hour rule allows penalty-free cancellation within 24 hours of booking, provided the booking was made at least seven days before departure. On other routes, cancellation and refund rights depend entirely on your fare conditions. Economy Special is the most restrictive and Flex Plus the most flexible, so check the fare rules shown at booking.
Does Emirates belong to an airline alliance?
No. Emirates is not a member of Oneworld, Star Alliance or SkyTeam. It runs its own network of codeshare and interline partnerships instead, including a close partnership with Qantas and connections with flydubai, so itineraries can still continue beyond Dubai on a single ticket.
Can I take a pet on an Emirates flight?
Not in the cabin. Emirates does not accept pets as cabin baggage, with the exception of recognised assistance dogs and, on certain regional routes, falcons. All other animals travel in the hold as checked baggage or as cargo, subject to route, container and documentation requirements. Arrange this well in advance with Emirates directly, because pet travel cannot be added at the airport.
What is Dubai Connect?
Dubai Connect is Emirates’ complimentary hotel programme for passengers with a long connection through Dubai. Eligible travellers receive hotel accommodation, transfers, meals and visa arrangements at no extra cost. Eligibility depends on cabin, fare type and the length of your layover, and it must be arranged through Emirates rather than added at the airport.
How do Emirates Skywards miles work?
Skywards has four tiers: Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Miles are earned on eligible fare classes, and the earning rate depends on your cabin and fare rather than being flat across all tickets. Some heavily discounted Economy fare classes earn reduced miles or none at all, so check the fare conditions if mileage accrual matters to you. Add your Skywards number to the booking before you fly, since tier benefits such as extra baggage are applied from the reservation record.
Which US cities does Emirates fly to?
Emirates serves around a dozen US gateways with nonstop service to Dubai, including New York JFK, Newark, Boston, Washington Dulles, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, Houston, Dallas Fort Worth, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Aircraft type varies by route and season, so the A380 and the cabins available on it are not offered on every US service.
