Jetstar Cancellation Policy: Fares & Fees Fully Explained
Jetstar does not offer a 24-hour free cancellation window. Once you complete a booking, it is final under Jetstar's fare rules. This applies regardless of how soon after booking you attempt to cancel. Australian Consumer Law (ACL) provides separate protections if Jetstar itself cancels or significantly delays your flight — but these are airline-fault scenarios, not a change-of-mind right.

24-Hour Rule
Limited 24-hour cancellation.
Cancellation Fees
| Fare Class | Fee |
|---|---|
| Basic Economy | Starter fares are non-refundable. You cannot get money back. The only refund available is AUD $50 administration fee to reclaim government taxes and third-party charges — meaning you pay $50 to get back whatever taxes were included in your fare. |
| Main Cabin | Starter Plus fares are also non-refundable for the base fare. However, if you purchased the optional FareCredit add-on at booking (price varies by route), you receive a Jetstar travel voucher for the full fare value upon cancellation. |
| Premium | Starter Max fares: refundable for an AUD $50 administration fee. The remaining fare value is returned to your original payment method. This is the cheapest fare class that offers actual money-back cancellation. |
| Business | Business Max fares: refundable for an AUD $50 administration fee, same as Starter Max. Full fare value returned minus the $50 fee. |
Change Fees
| Fare Class | Fee |
|---|---|
| Basic Economy | Starter fares: AUD $70-$110 change fee depending on route distance and timing. Domestic changes cost less than international. Changes made 30+ days before departure are at the lower end of the range. Fare difference always applies on top of the fee. |
| Main Cabin | Starter Plus fares: no change fee — you only pay the fare difference if the new flight costs more. This is the main reason to choose Starter Plus over basic Starter if your dates are uncertain. |
| Premium | Starter Max fares: no change fee, fare difference only. Includes the same flexibility as Starter Plus with additional inclusions (checked bag, seat selection, meals). |
| Business | Business Class: no change fee, fare difference only. Jetstar Business is only available on their 787 Dreamliner international routes (Australia to Japan, Bali, Hawaii). |
Refund Method
When a refund is owed (Starter Max, Business Max, or airline-fault cancellation), it goes to your original payment method within 7-10 business days. For FareCredit cancellations, you receive a Jetstar travel voucher valid for 12 months — usable on any Jetstar, Jetstar Asia, or Jetstar Japan flight.
Same-Day Change
Jetstar does not offer same-day standby or free same-day changes on any fare class. If you need to change to a different flight on the same day, the standard change fee applies (AUD $75-$120 depending on timing, free for Plus/Max) plus any fare difference. There is no airport-day-of flexibility option.
No-Show Policy
If you do not check in by the cutoff (typically 30 minutes before domestic, 60 minutes before international) or fail to board, your entire fare is forfeited. No credit, no voucher, no refund — regardless of fare class. Even Starter Max and Business Max tickets lose their refundability if you no-show instead of cancelling before departure.
If Jetstar Cancels Your Flight
When an airline cancels or significantly changes your flight, U.S. Department of Transportation regulations require the airline to provide a full refund to the original form of payment — including ticket price, taxes, fees, and any paid extras — regardless of fare type.
Under DOT rules, a "significant change" includes: arrival delayed 3+ hours (domestic) or 6+ hours (international), a change in departure or arrival airport, additional connections, or an involuntary downgrade to a lower class of service.
The refund must be issued automatically within 7 business days for credit card purchases or 20 calendar days for other payment methods. Airlines may offer travel credits or vouchers as an alternative, but must inform you of your right to a cash refund. You are not required to accept a voucher.

How to Cancel
- Go to jetstar.com → Manage Booking → enter your booking reference (6 characters) and last name. Select the flight segment you want to cancel.
- Review the cancellation summary showing what refund (if any) you will receive based on your fare class. For Starter fares, this will show $0 refund plus the option to claim tax refund for $50.
- Confirm the cancellation. If a refund is owed, it processes automatically — no need to contact Jetstar separately.
- Save your confirmation email. If you received a travel voucher (FareCredit), note the voucher code and 12-month expiry date immediately.
Tips
- FareCredit (AUD $28-$65 at booking) is the only way to get value back from a Starter or Starter Plus cancellation. If there is any chance your plans change, add it at checkout — you cannot purchase it after booking.
- Change fees are lower when made 30+ days before departure. A change at 31 days might cost AUD $70; the same change at 7 days costs AUD $110. Plan early.
- Never call Jetstar to make changes — the Contact Centre charges an additional AUD $50 booking fee on top of any change fee. Always use Manage Booking online.
- If Jetstar cancels your flight (not you cancelling), you are entitled to a full refund or rebooking under Australian Consumer Law — do not accept a voucher unless you prefer one.
